Customer Sink Parameters

Providing your own sink? Before we can approve it, we'll need the manufacturer, model number, dimensions, and a few other details. Check the full requirement list here!

Customer Sink Parameters

Choosing the correct sink is essential to producing a safe, functional countertop. The sink must fit the cabinet, leave sufficient countertop material around the cutout, and provide adequate clearance for faucets, mounting hardware, plumbing, and accessories, and also leave sufficient room for window ledges that can get in the way for faucets.

All sink dimensions refer to the sink’s complete outside dimensions, including its mounting flange—not only the inside bowl.

Vanity Sink Size Guidelines

Finished countertop depth | Maximum recommended sink size

  • 21 inches or less: 18" × 13" outside; approximately 16" × 11" inside bowl
  • More than 21 inches: 20½" × 15¼" outside; approximately 18" × 13" inside bowl

These are general guidelines. Final approval depends on the actual cabinet construction, countertop design, faucet placement, and sink specifications. For countertops exactly 21 inches deep, the smaller sink is recommended unless Granite America approves the larger sink.

Customer-Supplied Sinks

Before purchasing a customer-supplied sink, please provide Granite America with:

  • Manufacturer and model number
  • Manufacturer’s specification sheet
  • Complete outside sink dimensions
  • Required cutout dimensions
  • Manufacturer’s minimum cabinet-size requirement
  • Installation type: undermount, top-mount, dual-mount, or apron-front
  • Desired sink reveal
  • Faucet and accessory-hole requirements

The physical sink must be present at the jobsite at the time of professional measurement. A model number, paper template, or online specification sheet alone is not sufficient. Granite America will physically measure the sink and verify its compatibility with the cabinet and countertop.

Final sink approval occurs during the professional measurement.

Standard Kitchen Sinks

The customer is responsible for confirming that the sink meets the manufacturer’s minimum cabinet-size requirement and fits within the cabinet’s actual clear interior opening.

The nominal cabinet size does not represent the usable interior space. Cabinet walls, face frames, drawers, braces, plumbing, garbage disposals, dishwasher placement, and mounting hardware can reduce the available space.

The sink must allow adequate room for:

  • Mounting clips or a sink-support system
  • Faucet stems and supply lines
  • Garbage disposal and drain connections
  • Soap dispensers and other accessories
  • Sufficient countertop material around the cutout
  • Proper front and rear countertop setbacks

Granite America does not modify cabinets to accommodate oversized sinks.

Farmhouse and Apron-Front Sinks

Farmhouse and apron-front sinks must be completely installed, leveled, permanently supported, and placed in their final position before Granite America measures the countertops.

The cabinet contractor or qualified installer is responsible for:

  • Modifying the sink cabinet
  • Providing permanent structural support
  • Setting the finished sink height
  • Leveling and centering the sink
  • Establishing the final projection beyond the cabinet
  • Confirming the apron alignment with cabinet doors and panels

The desired reveal and countertop relationship must be finalized before measurement. Any movement or adjustment of the sink after measurement may require a new measurement, additional charges, and installation delays.

Granite America does not install, level, support, or modify cabinets for farmhouse sinks.

Cast-Iron Sinks

Cast-iron sinks are extremely heavy and require special support.

Undermount cast-iron sinks must be permanently supported and installed by a licensed plumber or qualified cabinet professional before countertop installation. Granite America may require the sink to be installed before measurement when its position affects the countertop cutout.

Top-mount or overmount cast-iron sinks are not accepted because their weight, shape, and installation requirements create an increased risk of countertop damage.

Factory faucet holes in cast-iron sinks must align with the countertop faucet holes. The physical sink must be onsite so Granite America can verify the exact locations.

Top-Mount and Drop-In Sinks

Granite America recommends undermount sinks whenever practical. Top-mount and drop-in sinks require prior approval.

The physical sink and manufacturer’s cutout template must be available before fabrication. The customer must ensure that the sink rim, mounting clips, faucet deck, and accessories fit the cabinet and countertop.

Top-mount sink cutouts may need to be completed at the jobsite and can create interior dust. Granite America uses appropriate dust-control equipment, but a completely dust-free installation cannot be guaranteed.

Top-mount cast-iron sinks are not accepted.

Dual-Mount Sinks

Sinks advertised for both undermount and top-mount installation require special review. Some dual-mount sinks have wide flanges, predrilled faucet holes, accessory holes, or structural features that make undermount installation impractical.

Granite America will determine whether the selected sink is suitable for the requested installation method. Approval by the sink manufacturer does not guarantee compatibility with the cabinet or stone countertop.

Workstation and Accessory-Ledge Sinks

Workstation sinks, chef sinks, and sinks with accessory ledges require additional clearance and detailed manufacturer specifications.

All accessories that affect the cutout—including cutting boards, colanders, drying racks, faucet decks, soap dispensers, and disposal buttons—must be identified before measurement.

The customer must confirm that sufficient cabinet and countertop space remains for the sink, faucet, accessories, mounting hardware, plumbing, and garbage disposal.

Granite-Composite, Fireclay and Handmade Sinks

Granite-composite, fireclay, copper, and handmade sinks may vary from their published dimensions. The physical sink must be onsite and measured before fabrication.

These sinks may have:

  • Uneven or tapered sides
  • Irregular flanges
  • Rounded or nonuniform corners
  • Manufacturing tolerances
  • Special support requirements
  • Limited space for faucet holes

Granite America is not responsible for dimensional differences between the physical sink and the manufacturer’s published specifications.

Corner, Oversized and Other Complex Sinks

Corner sinks, oversized sinks, sinks installed in diagonal cabinets, thick-flange sinks, zero-radius sinks, integrated drainboard sinks, and other unusual designs require Granite America’s approval before purchase.

Some installations may require cabinet-side modification or “scooping.” Any required cabinet modification must be completed by the customer’s cabinet professional. Cabinet modification may not be possible when a dishwasher, drawer, appliance, or structural panel is located beside the sink cabinet.

Granite America cannot fabricate perfectly sharp 90-degree inside corners in stone or quartz because sharp corners increase the risk of stress fractures. The fabricated cutout will include an appropriate inside radius.

Sink Reveal and Placement

Granite America’s standard undermount installation uses a countertop overhang into the sink opening. A positive reveal, flush reveal, or other custom reveal must be requested and approved before measurement.

The sink is normally centered on the sink cabinet unless a different centerline is approved during measurement. Sink location, centerline, reveal, faucet placement, and accessory-hole placement become final after customer approval.

Changes After Measurement

Changing the sink, faucet, installation method, reveal, or accessory configuration after professional measurement may require:

  • A new site visit
  • A revised countertop drawing
  • A new cutout or fabrication plan
  • Cabinet modifications
  • Additional charges
  • Rescheduling of fabrication or installation

Do not replace or exchange the approved sink without first receiving written approval from Granite America.

Installation and Plumbing

Granite America does not perform plumbing, electrical work, or major cabinet modifications.

Sink accessories—including drains, strainers, faucets, disposal flanges, grids, and plumbing connections—are not included unless specifically listed on the sale order.

Final plumbing connections should be completed no sooner than 24 hours after countertop installation so the sink adhesive and silicone can cure properly.

Granite America reserves final approval of every sink based on the physical sink, cabinet construction, countertop material, cutout requirements, and jobsite conditions.
